I don't know the words "commonplace journal," but I use an e-reader and kind of the same system. I underline the things that stand out to me, then when I finish the book, I go back through all my notes. I have a little notebook that I write the quotes down in. If I think I want to use one as a writing prompt, it goes into a file in my reMarkable tablet for later.
At the moment, I'm journaling my way through Monsters and in that case, I read a chapter and highlight, but then I write a response/reflection at the end of each chapter instead of just tucking things away.
I love this concept. I’ve always been a highlighter, margin hotter, and notetaker but never had a system to revisit those points I found worth “saving for further thought or reference.” I’m going to explore implementing this, for sure! Thank you for taking the time to share.
I just keep a stack of index cards wrapped up in a rubber band, but they are mostly on the same topic (general life improvement-ish). I’d like to build a better routine or practice of revisiting the cards. I do it randomly, but feel like it would be nice to dip into it more often. How do you re-engage with the cards once they are in the box?
I love this, Sarah! I just ordered a notecard container and dividers so I can do this same method. I’ve always wondered how I could easily find quotes that I highlighted about a topic I can’t remember what book it was from.

Talk to me about The Daily Stoic. Like, for real.
Love that we’re having this Pantsuit Politics X Ryan Holiday moment. I’m all in.
I’ve read almost all of his books. Except a few of the early marketing ones.

I put quotes that stick out to me in Google Keep. I’m just a basic B.
